Case Study: The 18th Commonwealth Table Tennis Championships
What The Client Wanted
Having provided companies, sports events and individuals with highly successful viral games repeatedly in the past, Tentacle Solutions was approached by the organisers of the 18th Commonwealth Table Tennis Championship to bid for the contract to provide the official game. It was to be based on the actual championships in order to promote their presence in Glasgow between the 19th and 25th May 2009. As a marketing tool, it was to be a free game that individuals of all ages could play at their leisure.
Our UK based games design and development team was to design and build a flash virtual table tennis game that was to be hosted solely online. Tentacle Solutions had built sporting games for promotional purposes before and so was fully qualified to build this specific game. However, there was to be a twist. The table tennis viral was to be a one player game that would encourage individuals to hit targets on the other side of the table for the Commonwealth. High scores were to be recorded and displayed on the associated website, with prizes including tickets for the Championship Finals.
A further requirement of the client was that there would be a keep fit message incorporated into the game itself to encourage people of all ages, from children to the elderly, to take part in some form of exercise. Given the number of individuals that play games online and the availability of the viral that the UK based games design and development team were to create, this goal was attainable.
What Tentacle Solutions did:
During the course of the project, the Tentacle Solutions design and development team communicated regularly with the client given that the scope of the project was wide and the time frame in which to produce it was shorter than those we had previously had for other similar games design and development projects. However, we worked long hours to ensure that it was completed on time.
The requirements and specifications of the clients were comprehensive and, whilst allowing a little creative freedom, they had a very specific idea of what the finished project should look like and also what it should offer. As such, Tentacle Solutions maintained contact with both Table Tennis Scotland and the body for Culture and Sport Glasgow, who were acting under the authority granted by the Commonwealth Table Tennis Federation, throughout. It was important to make sure that both parties were happy so that the launch could go ahead as planned given that it was a vital element of the marketing and advertising of the event. Active negotiations over the rights and terms of the finished game were sought with both parties to ensure that the process was as smooth as possible.
What Tentacle Solutions Delivered
Tentacle Solutions effectively commenced work after all specifications were received and built the entire game within a short period of time. Our capable and creative team designed the viral game with the full requirements and specifications of the clients in mind. Keeping the client fully informed throughout the design process and the consequent build, we provided them with the following:
This particular game received incredible feedback from users that went above and beyond the expectations of the clients. It was incredibly successful and promoted the event effectively, even enticing an audience that may not have known about the Commonwealth Table Tennis Championship let alone the fact that it was to be held in Glasgow. As such, it achieved more than was initially thought possible.
