Case Study: Cactus TV

What the client wanted:

For this particular case study, the bosses of Cactus TV, a high profile TV production company that happened to be producing Richard and Judy’s New Position, contacted Tentacle Solutions. The husband and wife team’s TV show was to be aired on the new WatchTV channel two weeks after the original conversation took place.

Cactus TV wanted a game before the pilot episode aired, thus giving Tentacle Solutions’s UK based games design and development team just two weeks to design the game based on an original idea and develop it in order to be used live on the actual show as an ongoing feature.

The idea presented was designed to add another dimension to the show in a way that complimented the content of the daily episodes, thus giving it a fresh but renewed interest from viewers. It was based around the idea of having a game that an individual took part in with a view to secure a place on the leaderboard, much like that pioneered by Top Gear, whose segment “Star In A Reasonably Priced Car” had proven to be a massive hit. Cactus TV’s challenge was to be a celebrity walking along a red carpet. Before said celebrity reached the end of the carpet, he or she would be pestered by fans and the paparazzi and had to behave accordingly in order to accumulate points and get as close to the top of the leaderboard as possible.

What Tentacle Solutions did:

After speaking to representatives at Cactus TV over the phone, we immediately flew to London to meet with them. Given the short time in which the project was to be completed, that initial meeting was crucial to the development commencing within as short a period of time as possible and the initial idea was discussed in depth. This was of course followed by a discussion of their expectations and what they wanted and needed the game to achieve within the context of the TV show itself.

Following the initial meeting, Tentacle Solutions began designing and developing the game to their initial specifications, remaining in constant contact the entire time to ensure that we were working to fulfil the set objective in complete harmony. Further meetings and numerous conversations took place, in which the finer details were discussed in depth with a view to creating different characters within the game to give it a realistic edge. Also discussed were the sound effects, music and other issues within the game that would affect the final product.

Aside from being fully informed regarding the development process, Cactus TV was also sent several demo versions of the game in order to provide feedback in line with their requirements and specifications. This feedback was then used by Tentacle Solutions to gauge exactly where the development process was and how to progress to ensure that the game would be delivered complete within the given time of two weeks.

What Tentacle Solutions delivered:

Despite the two week turnaround and resultant quick deadline, Tentacle Solutions delivered the fully functional completed game by the deadline. It was a high quality and highly polished game that delivered in every single way. All of Cactus TV’s requirements and specifications were fully met as a result of many late nights on the part of the UK based games design and development team, with various changes being made right up until the demos and then the finished product was delivered.

The game Tentacle Solutions created and delivered for Cactus TV has fulfilled all of the aims that it was designed to achieve and has proved to be a huge success on all levels.
